![]() Phonograph Needles Disk Phonograph Needles / Stylii Steel Needles: Steel needles are small steel needles with straight shanks coming down to a fine point. These needles are used on about 99% of all disk machines. There are many tones to these needles but there are only "soft, medium, and loud" tones curently being made. The tones of the needles are determined by the thickness of the needle's shank. These steel needles are designed to play once or twice and then thrown away. If they are used more than that, the dullness that ocurs after 2 plays will "widen" and wear down the grooves of the records, ultimately damaging them. When ordering these needles, please specify which tones of needles you would like.
Prices of Steel Needles: 1 pack (100 needles) $5 // 5 packs (500 needles) $20 // 10 packs (1000 needles) $34 // ask for more savings past 10 packs
Diamond Needles: These diamond needles are used on all brands of Edison disk phonographs. This brass "arm" with diamond attached fits onto the bottom of the original Edison diamond reproducer. These are set by a jeweler and imported from England. You won't find any better diamonds from anywhere else.
Price of Diamond Needles: $90 to $110 (ask for availability)
"Straight Shank" Jewel Needles (sapphires or diamonds): There aren't very many phonographs that use these jewel needles. The most common ones that do are a select few Pathe phonogaphs and some Brunswick phonographs. Other phonographs can use these types of needles as well, but only if the reproducer can turn at the end of the tonearm. These reproducers would need to turn into the "vertical" position. The sapphire stylii would be used to play any non-Edison "vertical" record, such as Pathes or Brunswicks. The diamond stylii would be used to play any 1/4" thick Edison disk record. Cylinder Phonograph Needles / Stylii Cylinder phonographs use many different styles of stylii. Some machines use the same stylii but the stylii may be mounted onto different bars. There are 2 major stylii available: Columbia and Edison. Here are the different stylii available as well as their prices. All of the prices below include the bar that the stylus is mounted to unless noted otherwise. If you don't see the stylus or stylus bar in this list, it may still be available.
